Enjoy the big waves in winter or the calmer surf in the summer at Waimea Bay – one of the popular Oahu Beaches on the North Shore.
About Waimea Bay:
Anyone who cares even a little bit about surfing has likely heard of Waimea Bay. It was here that big wave surfing got its start in the 1950’s. Until then, the big waves were left alone, but that all changed in 1957 when some surfers decided to give those big swells a try. The rest is surfing history.
Guests at Ambassador Hotel – A Honolulu Hotel can head to Waimea Bay to watch the surfers or, if they are experienced enough, try to catch the big waves.
This Oahu Beach, located on the North Shore, is still hugely popular with surfers, and some of the best surf competitions in the world are held here. One contest, Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, takes place only during massive swells. In the past 25 years, this contest has only taken place 8 times.
The big waves make the water dangerous for beginner surfers or swimmers during the winter months. The waters of Waimea Bay calm down during the summer and the water is then suitable for swimming and, in some cases, for intermediate surfers.
When you visit this Honolulu Attraction, you will enjoy gorgeous views and amenities such as onsite parking, restrooms and picnic areas. Lifeguards are on duty during certain times of the day at Waimea Bay.
Other Honolulu Attractions are located near this Oahu Beach such as Waimea Falls and Waimea Valley Botanical Gardens. Ambassador Hotel – A Honolulu Hotel is located near many popular Honolulu Attractions and is just a short walk from Waikiki Beach. During your next stay at our Honolulu Hotel, pay a visit to a slice of surf history, and spend the day at Waimea Bay.
