Hike Diamond Head Crater and Enjoy the View!

Work off that fabulous plate lunch with a hike up one of Oahu’s iconic attractions.

The view from the summit of Diamond Head Crater is spectacular, and making the roughly one mile hike is a favorite Oahu thing to do. Diamond Head Crater itself is instantly recognizable. It is a massive crater that was formed between 200,000 and 300,000 years ago by a volcanic explosion. Today, exploring the crater is a top Honolulu Activity for guests of Waikiki Hotels.

While the climb is not particularly long, some visitors to find it to be quite strenuous. The trek to the summit of Diamond Head Crater is steep with the final portion of the climb including somewhat arduous steps. That is not to say that one must be in tiptop shape to enjoy this Honolulu Activity, but keep in mind that it does involve more than a leisurely stroll.

You’ll start on a trail up the side of the crater. Then you will climb 74 steps, go through a tunnel and then another rather steep set of 99 stairs. The effort that it takes to reach the top will not go unrewarded. Those who do make the climb will be treated to absolutely breathtaking views of Oahu and the surrounding waters. Should you enjoy this Honolulu Activity from December to April, you’ll have a good chance of seeing Humpback Whales playing in the distance.

Along with the natural beauty, hikers will also find some a 1917 lighthouse and some bunkers at the summit of Diamond Head Crater. The average time to hike to summit is about 2 hours. During your next stay at Ambassador Hotel – A Waikiki Hotel, be sure to schedule a day to enjoy this Oahu Thing to Do.
